Carol Moseley Braun Campaign Statement on Rahm Emanuel's New Radio Ad

December 8, 2010 -- In response to Mayoral candidate Rahm Emanuel's radio advertisement airing throughout Chicago, Mike Noonan, campaign manager for Carol Moseley Braun issued this statement:

"Rahm Emanuel’s commercial tries to mislead the voters of Chicago by claiming that he was somehow responsible for putting more police on Chicago streets and passing the Violence Against Women Act. This is just not true. The facts are clear and in sharp contrast to false claims in Mr. Emanuel’s ad. Working closely with President Bill Clinton, Senator Carol Moseley Braun championed and voted on the 1994 Crime Bill that was responsible for putting 100,000 more police on the streets, hundreds more in Chicago. During that period, Emanuel was a staffer and advisor at the White House, period. Only unabashed arrogance would allow a staffer to claim the he led the fight on any major public policy. The President and his allies in Congress did the leading, not Mr. Emanuel. He didn’t pass anything. He did not have a vote. For him to falsely claim that he somehow enacted these large national policies as a staffer is simply not true. The people of Chicago are tired of the political double talk that is masquerading as political discourse in Mr. Emanuel’s slick media campaign financed through the huge contributions from America’s corporate moguls. The working people of Chicago deserve straight talk and a Mayor who will stand up for them. I call on Mr. Emanuel to come out from behind his paid media wall and enter into the arena of ideas that the voters of Chicago are demanding during this campaign. There are three public Mayoral forums next week. Mr. Emanuel should show up and answer question about the false and exaggerated claims made in his advertising.”
